Women Integrated Empowerment Development (WIED) is a Ugandan government–registered, community-based NGO, founded and led by vulnerable women in Buwenda, Jinja City. We are committed to eliminating poverty and fostering socio-economic development in our community by equipping rural women and youth with skills that create dignified employment opportunities.
WIED began as a small group of 30 single mothers, widows, and HIV/AIDS-positive women who came together with a shared goal: to support one another, fight poverty, and earn a living through creativity. Using locally available materials such as banana fibre and recycled paper, the group produced and sold handmade crafts—earrings, mats, bags—turning skills into sustainable income.
Over time, our network grew to over 300 members, now including caregivers, elderly women, and orphaned youth. In 2016, we expanded our activities by opening a cow horn factory in Jinja. This allowed us to diversify our product range to include domestic items like bowls and combs, as well as decorative pieces such as necklaces and flower vessels.
Through these initiatives, WIED has empowered hundreds with practical skills, restored spiritual and moral strength, and promoted community self-reliance. We believe that with the right tools, knowledge, and opportunities, rural women and youth can overcome poverty, ignorance, and disease—building a brighter future for themselves and their communities.
